United States Judicial System Coursework - 275 Words

United States Judicial System (Coursework Sample) Content: UNITED STATES JUSTICE SYSTEM Name:University:Course:Tutor:Date:Introduction The topic scenario that has been selected for this proposal is the United States justice system in the context of racial profiling and discrimination. American society has been dominated by issues of racism that has taken different forms. Indeed the issue of racism has been changing over time and the United States justice system has not been left out. The judicial system accorded different treatments to the African Americans, Hispanic, and non-Hispanic white individuals between the age group of 25 and 29 (Austin Irwin 2001). This proposal is therefore significant in unearthing the racial profiling and discrimination within the judicial system, the factors that determined the racial group that got involved in crime, and the number of judicial personnel that came from the different racial groups. Further, this proposal is determined to prove the existence of inequality within the U.S. judicial system. Literature Review Research has showed that in the year 2003, approximately 10.4 percent of all the African American males who were aged 25 to 29 were incarcerated, unlike 2.4 percent of the Hispanic male and 1.2 percent of the non-Hispanic male of the same age group. The history of racial discrimination within the U.S. judicial system can be traced back to 1980s when there was increased typification of the male criminals as being blacks (Austin Irwin 2001). The issue of crack cocaine made several African Americans victims as compared to the other racial groups since it was less expensive and was therefore used by impoverished racial minorities. Moreover, it promoted punitive policies that targeted the population of African Americans. This section will look at the secondary sources in order to determine the reasons African Americans were more likely to be in jail as compared to other racial groups. Further, it will research on the incidents that occur in the U.S. re garding prosecution, convictions, the prison sentences as well as time served by each of the social groups. Finally it will look at factors that were associated to getting involved in a crime as well as the number of judicial system personnel from the different racial groups. Nonetheless, the researcher expects to find increased racial discrimination within the U.S. justice system with several African Americans being incarcerated as compared to the other racial groups. Moreover, the proposal expects to find more non-Hispanic white personnel within the judicial system as compared to other racial groups. Methodology This section outlines the methodology that this proposal will adopt in carrying out the research. This will be a quantitative research and the methodological approach to be used is sampling su...
